Will of the Trees is a sapling growing on Johnnycake Hill outside of Hamilton, New York.
The seed was sown in the shadow of retirement and the sunlight of a desire to create fine wood products that showcase the life of the tree... and
“What the heck are we going to do now that we’re retired from a combined fifty years of teaching and twenty years of designing computer applications?”
The kids grew up and left home. The trees grew up and needed tending. When you love wood’s patterns and textures, when you enjoy using tools to create, problem solving, being outdoors and being together - and you own a woodlot - you begin a business to craft unique, useful, fine wood products.
Each piece is built from the ground up. We fell the trees, mill the lumber, dry the lumber in our homemade solar kiln, and then prepare each piece in our shop.
All of the products from Will of the Trees are finely crafted and each board has been selected and positioned to showcase the life of the tree and the natural patterns of the wood. Each piece we create is from an original design. We create the templates, jigs, and processes for each design. We experiment with many forms of joinery and incorporate the natural, seasonal expansion and contraction of the wood in visible ways in our designs.
The pieces are carefully finished and have a natural 0% VOC finish. Each piece is unique and carries a numbered brass tag.
